Home Automation Scope Checklist: Before You Get a Quote

Taleef Technologies Team · 2026-08-05

Why this is worth doing before the first call

A home automation quote is only as good as the scope behind it. Walking into a consultation with clear answers to the questions below turns a vague “what’s this going to cost” conversation into a real, specific one, and it’s the same information a design consultation would ask for anyway, just gathered on your own time first.

Property basics

  • New build (electrical planning not yet finalised) or an existing home you’re already living in?
  • Villa or apartment, and roughly how many rooms or zones?
  • If it’s an apartment, do you know of any building-level restrictions on wiring or access-system changes?

Which systems actually matter to you

Go through this list and mark each as “now,” “later,” or “not needed,” rather than assuming everything needs to happen at once:

  • Lighting (switches, dimming, scene control)
  • Curtains and blinds
  • Climate control (temperature, humidity, air quality)
  • Security and access (locks, sensors, motion detection)
  • Safety (smoke, gas, water-leak detection, panic button)
  • Garage access
  • Entertainment
  • Outdoor and irrigation
  • Energy monitoring

Most homeowners don’t automate everything on day one. Knowing which of these are “now” versus “add later” is exactly the information that shapes a realistic first-phase scope.

What’s already in the property

  • Any existing smart-home devices already installed (which brand or ecosystem)?
  • Any planned renovation work that would affect wiring, walls, or ceilings?
  • If it’s a new build, what stage is the electrical plan at right now?

What’s actually driving the decision

  • Is there a specific problem prompting this (a security concern, an inconvenience, a new addition to the property), or is it a general upgrade?
  • Is disruption during installation a real constraint, because you’re living in the home, or is timing flexible?
  • Is there a rough timeline this needs to align with (a move-in date, a handover date, an event)?

Bringing this to a consultation

Taleef’s Home Automation consultation is available as a video call for anyone not local to the installation area, or an on-site visit, and starts from exactly this kind of information: what matters most, what’s already there, and what constraints actually shape the project, not a fixed package sold the same way to every property.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why go through a scope checklist before the first call with a home automation company?

A home automation quote is only as good as the scope behind it. Working through clear answers first turns a vague 'what's this going to cost' conversation into a real, specific one, and it's the same information a design consultation would ask for anyway.

Do I need to decide on every system before getting a quote?

No. Go through the list of systems, lighting, climate, security, entertainment, and so on, and mark each as 'now,' 'later,' or 'not needed,' rather than assuming everything needs to happen at once. Most homeowners don't automate everything on day one.

Does it matter whether my property is a new build or an existing home?

Yes. Whether it's a new build with electrical planning not yet finalised, or an existing home you're already living in, changes what's realistic, along with what stage the electrical plan is at if it's a new build, or any planned renovation work that would affect wiring, walls, or ceilings.

What information actually shapes a realistic first-phase scope?

What's already installed in the property, what's driving the decision (a specific problem versus a general upgrade), whether disruption during installation is a real constraint, and any rough timeline like a move-in or handover date.

Can I have this consultation as a video call instead of an on-site visit?

Yes. Taleef's Home Automation consultation is available as a video call for anyone not local to the installation area, or as an on-site visit.
